An Honest Conversation About Back Pain
Having had conversations with 100’s of adults with back pain, I can say that most people are very confused about what they should be doing about their pain. With so much information and mixed messages out there it’s easy to see why. But it doesn’t have to be. Which is why I wanted to have an honest conversation about what it is going to take for anyone to finally SOLVE their back pain.
1. Back Pain is Never the Actual Problem
Most people don’t seek help for their back pain until it starts to have an impact on their daily life. This is important because a treatment plan to get out of pain (rest, pain pills, injections, etc.) is not the same as a treatment plan to get someone back to hiking, exercising, whatever it is they like to do.
2. The Difference Between Living with a Problem and Solving a Problem
Let me know if this sounds familiar…come in for your adjustment/massage, feel great, return in one month with the same problem. The traditional approach to treating back pain is to provide just enough help so you can make it through your day – not offer a solution.
The truth is that 90% of non traumatic low back pain in adults can be linked to not moving properly, not moving enough, or our bodies not being strong enough to support the things that we love to do. A solution to back pain requires a more comprehensive plan that entails therapy, movement, and strength.
3. You Need a Coach (Not a Doctor)
There will never be a quick fix for back pain and anyone who tells you that there is, is lying to you. Which is why you need a doctor that can serve as your coach. Putting together a crystal-clear plan so you know exactly what you need to do to solve your back pain and provide the accountability and motivation to keep you excited, energized, and optimistic about your recovery.
