The Top Three Reasons People Feel Older Than They Should And What To Do About It

 
 

One of the more common things we hear in the clinic, and the driving reason that many people come to chat with us initially, is a thought that they ‘feel older than they should’. Usually it will be a big birthday or event coming up that will get them wondering why they’re waking up and living with constant stiff, achy, and painful joints. They’ll say things like, “I’m only 50 but I feel like I’m 70”….

While living with constant stiffness and soreness is annoying, the real worry is about how they will feel in the next 5, 10, or even 20 years. Sounds familiar?


In today’s article we cover the top three reasons that people feel older than they should and what they can do about it to start living active, healthy, and happy lives.

  1. Not Moving Enough

    The easiest and most obvious reason for our daily aches and pains is that we (as in our society) don’t move enough. Sitting (or standing) for long hours of the day causes changes in our muscles and joints that - over time - lead to people feeling older than they should

    The solution: Move more. It’s a simple truth that if we can’t come up with ways to incorporate movement into our daily routine we will always end up feeling stiff, achy, and older than we actually are. No pill, therapy, or surgery can get us feeling better if we’re not moving.

  2. Moving Too Much

    On the other side of the coin, moving too much can place a lot of force on our joints…especially if we’re not moving with the right form, or our bodies aren’t strong enough to support that movement.

    The solution: learn, practice and improve our movement patterns (how we coordinate our movements) to better PROTECT our joints. This is the #1 most common thing left out by our doctors and is the key to staying active, healthy, and happy.

  3. Not Strong Enough To Support Their Lifestyle

    Did you know that between the ages of 24 - 50, our muscle mass decreases by 5-10%? After the age of 50 our muscle mass will decrease, on average, by about 10% per decade. If our bodies are not strong enough to support our favorite activities - we will end up stiff, achy, and feeling older than we should.

    The solution: Get started on a program to help you safely and effectively build strength. To live our life without limitations, strength training NEEDS to be part of the equation.
